Economic Development and Job Creation

Employment opportunities provide individuals with not only financial stability but also a sense of purpose, dignity, and social inclusion. Meaningful work fosters self- esteem, personal growth, and a sense of belonging within communities. Economic development stimulates local economies, generating income, tax revenue, and investment in public services and infrastructure. A thriving job market also reduces poverty, inequality, and social disparities, contributing to improved health outcomes and social cohesion.

The province invests more than $160 million annually in employment and training supports, including supporting vulnerable populations (e.g., women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, unemployed and underemployed clients), and key social sectors.

A comprehensive suite of programs, services and supports is available to strengthen the province’s workforce, such as:

The new Working Opportunities Program will encourage, retrain, or upskill people who are non-EI eligible to fill workforce shortages. As a result, non-EI eligible individuals will be supported to attend full-time post- secondary programs, 12 weeks or greater in duration, at a private or public training institution. Supports can include tuition, books, fees, cost of living allowance, and childcare.
Employment Counselling – Individuals exploring career options or looking for employment can speak with Career Development Specialists located throughout the province to receive information, counselling, and follow-up services.
Pre-Employment Programs that provide eligible individuals with support to participate in personal life-skills development, career planning, or employment readiness prior to becoming employed.
Short Term Training Programs may support individuals to participate in skills training less than 12 weeks in duration, who are not eligible for student aid. This program aims to assist individuals to prepare for, find, and keep employment.
Community and Labour Market Partnerships programs provides support to community organizations to design and deliver programs and services that enhance labour force participation and respond to identified labour market needs.
