Access to safe, accessible, and affordable housing has been a critical element of improving the social and economic well-being of our communities. Actions have been guided by the largest ever investment in housing, and a commitment to improving access to affordable housing, housing that is affordable, and creating safe and secure housing options.

Highlights of our plan include:

  • Creation of over 870 housing options is underway or completed since 2021. This includes new builds, supportive and transitional housing, staffed shelter beds, second-stage housing, and private market rental assistance.
  • Nearly 3,000 individuals and families have accessed permanent housing since 2021.
  • Expansion completed or underway of over 180 staffed emergency shelter beds.
  • Over 70 transitional and supportive housing units created or under development.
  • Construction of 12 second stage housing units, and shelter beds for women underway.
  • A five-point plan to stimulate new home construction, as well as stabilize or reduce housing prices. These actions will result in upwards of 500 new housing options.
  • A provincial investment of over $80 million in the Affordable Rental Housing Program, which will support private and community sector projects that will result in the construction of approximately 900 new affordable rental homes.
  • Continued work to support future construction of a new $30 million integrated health, housing, and supportive services hub in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
  • Repairs and renovations to provincially-owned vacant units.
  • Development of over 100 homes public housing homes in Corner Brook, Central Newfoundland and Labrador West over four years.
  • Transitional Supportive Living Initiative in St. John’s opening in 2024-25, featuring over 100 rooms with wrap-around supports.
